Language endangerment-related videos

Thanks to Lev’s last post on the movie The Linguists, I’ve found a few jewels of videos on endangered language documentation, revitalization, etc.

The Linguists – Archiving for Speakers and Linguists is just one of them, but you’ll see some more related videos at the bottom of the screen.

random encounters

I was on the bike trailer this morning, heading to UCSC campus, when I told the shuttle driver about my linguistic work. We’d met many times before, but he is so talkative that most of our previous conversations had turned around his stuff –all he knew about me is that I was in a graduate program in Berkeley and I came down to Santa Cruz to surf every week last year.

Suddenly, when the driver got out of the shuttle to be replaced by another driver, this young woman sitting across the alley behind me excitedly started talking to me. She said she’d heard me mention my linguistic fieldwork and added that she’s attending the summer school at SOAS; she then told me about her interests. We got off the shuttle, grabbed our bikes and talked a bit longer. She’s a senior at UCSC’s ling dept.

rock pile

It was great to meet someone who’s at that stage, so strongly motivated and willing to do linguistic fieldwork. I encouraged her to continue to pursue this interest, of course.

And I felt so good thinking about my upcoming fieldwork in the Peruvian Amazon… I actually had a meeting with Lev, Chris and Ramon yesterday up in Berkeley and I can’t help but thinking about the trip quite often. It’s great.
